We Need You!

The Bruce Branch Boats is run almost entirely by volunteers, and we’re always looking for new helpers to join our friendly team. If you could spare some time to help with preparing the boats for hire, crewing on day trips or fundraising, we’d love to hear from you. It’s fun, anyone can do it, and there’s always time for a cuppa, a piece of cake and a chat. Plus, you’ll be helping disabled, disadvantaged or older people enjoy peaceful holiday on the canal.

And don’t worry, there’s no commitment – you can do as much or as little as you like. If you’d like to know more, email Elaine at and she’ll be in touch as soon as she can.

Boat Turnarounds

Preparing the boats to go out for hire is where we most need your help. We’re looking for volunteers to help out at Great Bedwyn Wharf each week from March to October, at the following times – though don’t forget you can do as much or as little as you like!

  • Fridays 9-11.30am (boats Rachel and Diana)
  • Saturdays 9-11.30am (boats Hannah and Rebecca)

For each boat we need:-

  • One Team Leader
  • Two engineers (one internal and one external)
  • Three inside cleaners
  • One outside cleaner
  • One pumpout person

Together, each team cleans the boat inside and out, pumps out the toilets and carries out routine engine maintenance. The Team Leader then sees the new group aboard.

On joining our team, you’ll be provided with a Welcome Pack to guide you through each role and you’ll be able to shadow another volunteer so that you can gradually pick up the job. Turnaround crews are very friendly and of course you’ll be welcome to enjoy tea and cake together in your break!

Day Trips

The Bruce Branch provides a crew of one Skipper and three Crew Members for each day trip. The days usually run from 10:30am to 4:00pm with our crew arriving at the Wharf by 9:45am to prepare the boat. In order to be a Skipper for our day crews, it is essential you have experience managing the boat and have attended a CCBM (Certificate in Community Boat Management) training course. The other crew members need experience on Bruce Branch boats.
